| Forty-two
years ago Jerome L. Holub was appointed
as the Chapter 13 Trustee by
Judge Harold F. White of the United States
Bankruptcy Court in Akron, Ohio. Mr.
Holub holds the distinction of being the
longest-serving Chapter 13 Trustee in the
country.
Jerome Holub
was an only son born on December 9th
1922, to Ben and
Rebecca Holub. Little
did they know their son would be so accomplished
later on in life. As a boy, Jerome
had many hobbies including collecting stamps
and reading the World Almanac. Holub
explained, “You pick up a lot of
information about stuff that interests
you” when asked about reading the
World Almanac. Above all, Jerome
was a sports enthusiast. His passion
for baseball was colossal and he dreamt
of becoming a sports writer. Jerome
Holub started working at a young age
as a newspaper delivery boy and enjoyed
playing
baseball on a VFW league.
Jerome was
very active during his high school career,
participating in several
clubs while also finding time to play
on Buchtel High School’s 1940
City Championship baseball
team. After graduation in 1940
Jerome knew what direction he wanted
to head. “I
didn’t hesitate. I was
going to college. There was no
question about that.”
Jerome’s passion for baseball led
him to Ohio State University in pursuit
of a journalism degree and a career as
a sports writer. That dream
was cut short with the onset of WWII.
The
United States Army put Jerome Holub
to work as a Field Artillery Recorder. Holub’s
position was similar to that of keeping
score of a ball game but was short lived. Holub, “saw
all the injustices in the Army” and
his pursuit of a journalism degree
was over shortly after returning
home in 1946.
It was 1947
and Jerome’s first year
at the University of Michigan as a law
student. Jerome’s philosophy
in life had changed since the Army. He
believed that everyone should be given
a chance to be heard. Holub knew
that when he graduated from college his
father, a lawyer with a specialty for corporate
law, would have a desk waiting for him.

Three
more years and a transfer to Ohio Northern
University would not keep Holub from
his Law Degree. Holub’s “biggest
problem was getting through school,” but
in 1951 Holub graduated from Ohio Northern
with a Bachelor of Law Degree. “I
didn’t know what I was going
to do after graduation” Holub
said, but decided to do some collections
work and quickly found his niche in
general practice.
Soon after
graduating from college, on Labor Day weekend, Holub met the woman that would
soon be his wife. Their whirlwind romance which is now described as a, “he
had the beverage and she had the opener” type of relationship, was not
very restrained. They were engaged within a week and married the following
December. The Holub’s are now celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary.
For
the next 15 years Holub worked with his father. In 1962, Jerome Holub was appointed
as the Chapter 13 Trustee. In 1966 his father passed and Holub decided
to keep the law office open. Holub believed in, a “one day at a time” type
of life, but for Holub that didn’t mean one thing at a time. Holub
is known for always doing two or three things at a time, and Holub has always
been able to make time for others.
In addition
to being the Chapter 13 Trustee, Jerome Holub is a current member of many
different organizations, including the Akron Bar Association, the Commercial
Law League
of America and a Charter Member of the National Association of Chapter
13 Trustees.
He has also
been president of many organizations
including the
Summit County Sports Hall of Fame,
the Akron Holocaust Commemorative
Committee, the Dapper
Dan Club of Akron, the Touchdown Club of Akron, Commander of the Fred
W. Reese VFW Post and Temple Israel. He has served on the Board of Trustees
of the Akron Bar Association, Executive Committee of the Akron Jewish Center,
Summit
County Republican Party, and the University of Michigan Alumni Club of
Greater Akron. Jerome was honored by the Akron Bar Association as
recipient of the Professionalism Award, as well as the Senior Lawyer Committee’s
Honoree of the Year. |
